Compounding, not accumulating

A note on why some people grow exponentially sharper over time — and most of us don't.

Most of us treat learning like a savings account. We make deposits — a book here, a course there — and trust the balance climbs. It does climb. Just slowly, and in a straight line.

The more interesting question isn’t how much you deposit. It’s what happens between deposits — whether each new idea can find the others already in the room, and multiply against them.

Addition has a ceiling

When knowledge only accumulates, every field stays in its own column. Finance over here, design over there, a little mathematics in the corner. Useful, tidy, and ultimately limited by how many columns one person can keep.

Multiplication breaks the columns. A habit borrowed from markets reshapes how you read a piece of music; a structure from music clarifies a data model. Each field becomes a lens for the others, and the returns stop being linear.

Knowledge added together grows. Knowledge multiplied compounds — and takes on a form no single field could hold alone.

That is the whole wager of HtPi: point the same habits of mind — distil, recompose, compound — at everything, and let the interest accrue.
